Choose a posture board based on the support already beneath your mattress, the available bed height and the exact dimensions of your frame. A bunkie board can create a firmer, flatter surface, but it must rest on a proper frame, platform or support system.
Posture Board & Bunkie Board Buying Guide
What Is a Posture Board or Bunkie Board?
A posture board—also commonly called a bunkie board—is a thin support layer placed between the mattress and a compatible bed frame or platform.
Sleepwell’s standard posture board is approximately 1.5 inches thick, providing added mattress support without the height of a traditional box spring.
When Should I Use a Posture Board?
A posture board may be useful when:
- Bed slats are widely spaced or slightly flexible
- A platform needs a flatter support surface
- You want a lower-profile alternative to a box spring
- A bunk bed or other frame requires additional mattress support
It can be used with compatible platform beds, slat beds and properly supported metal frames. It is not intended to repair a broken, bent or unsupported bed frame.
Can a Posture Board Replace a Box Spring?
It may replace a box spring in a compatible low-profile setup, but not in every bed frame.
A posture board still needs a stable structure underneath it. An open metal bed frame designed specifically for a mattress-and-box-spring set may continue to require a full foundation. Always check the mattress and frame support requirements before changing the setup.
What Size and Support Should I Check?
Choose a posture board that matches the mattress and fits properly inside the bed frame.
Before ordering, confirm:
- Mattress width and length
- Inside dimensions of the bed frame
- Slat spacing and rail placement
- Centre support for wider sizes
- Available height beneath the mattress
- Whether the board will rest evenly on all required supports
The standard product is currently offered in Twin, Twin XL, Double, Queen and King sizes.
Can You Make a Custom Posture Board?
Yes, custom posture boards and bunkie boards can be made for non-standard bed frames, antique beds, bunks, RVs and other unique sleeping spaces.
Provide the exact width, length and required thickness, along with information about the frame and existing support system. Sleepwell Bedding can review the measurements and recommend a suitable custom mattress-support board.

Low-Profile Support Beneath Your Mattress
A posture board, also called a bunkie board, sits between the mattress and a compatible bed frame, platform or slat system. It creates a firmer, more even support surface without adding the height of a traditional box spring.
With an approximate 1.5-inch profile, it can be useful for platform beds, bunk beds and other setups where additional mattress support is needed but overall bed height should remain low.
The board must rest evenly on a properly supported frame. It is not designed to repair broken slats, damaged rails or an unsupported bed structure.
