Review the crib manufacturer’s instructions and confirm the required mattress width, length and maximum thickness. Do not choose a baby crib mattress based only on labels such as “standard size,” because the mattress must fit the specific crib correctly.

Sleepwell’s Regular and Bamboo crib mattresses are approximately 28″ × 52″ and 15 cm thick, but the crib’s requirements should always be checked before ordering.

A crib mattress should fit firmly and snugly inside the crib without large spaces around the edges. Push the mattress against one side and check the remaining gap on the opposite side.

Health Canada states that the gap between the mattress and any part of the crib sides must not exceed 3 cm, and a crib mattress must not be thicker than 15 cm (6 inches).

For infant sleep, choose a mattress that remains firm and flat with limited sinking. Avoid adding mattress toppers, foam padding or other soft layers that change the sleep surface.

Health Canada recommends a firm, flat mattress with a tightly fitted sheet and advises keeping pillows, bumper pads, toys, quilts and loose bedding out of the crib.

Use a fitted crib sheet made for the mattress size and consider a fitted waterproof crib-mattress protector. Keep the mattress clean and dry, spot clean when necessary and allow it to dry fully before reuse.

Flip and rotate the mattress periodically for balanced wear, and replace it if it becomes damaged, worn, uneven or noticeably softer. Do not add extra cushioning or loose bedding on top of the mattress.
