Choosing the right bed frame or mattress base depends on your mattress type, room setup, desired bed height and the support required underneath. Compare metal frames, platform beds, box springs, posture boards and adjustable bases before ordering.
Bed Frame & Base Buying Guide
Which Bed Frame or Base Should I Choose?
Choose according to how the mattress will be supported:
- Metal bed frame: A simple raised frame generally used with a box spring or foundation.
- Platform bed: A complete bed structure that may support a mattress directly when its platform or slats meet the mattress requirements.
- Box spring or foundation: Creates an even support surface and adds height.
- Posture board or bunkie board: Adds low-profile support over an existing frame or slat system.
- Adjustable bed base: Raises and lowers sections of a compatible mattress.
Always confirm the exact product instructions and mattress-support requirements before completing the setup.
Does My Mattress Need a Box Spring?
It depends on the bed frame. Sleepwell’s standard metal bed frames are designed to support a mattress-and-box-spring set and are not intended for placing a mattress directly on the open frame.
A platform bed, adjustable base or properly supported slat system may not require a box spring. Check both the bed product and mattress warranty requirements before ordering.
Standard, Low-Profile or Split Box Spring?
Sleepwell currently offers:
- 7-inch Standard Box Spring: Adds traditional bed height.
- 5-inch Low-Profile Box Spring: Provides foundation support while keeping the overall setup lower.
- Split Box Spring: Easier to move through narrow stairways, hallways or doorways than a one-piece foundation.
The Standard and Low-Profile versions provide the same type of mattress-foundation function; the main difference is finished bed height. Sleepwell’s box-spring collection currently includes all three options.
What Is a Posture Board or Bunkie Board?
A posture board is a thin, firm support layer placed beneath a mattress. It can help strengthen a setup with widely spaced or flexible slats without adding the height of a regular box spring.
Sleepwell’s current Posture Board is approximately 1.5 inches thick and is listed for compatible standard frames, platform bases and bunk beds. Confirm the required dimensions and available clearance before ordering.
What Size and Support Should I Check?
Match the frame or base to the mattress size, but also check:
- Interior width and length
- Centre support for Double, Queen or King setups
- Slat spacing or platform construction
- Overall finished bed height
- Headboard compatibility
- Access through stairs, hallways and doorways
For example, Sleepwell’s Queen/King metal frame includes centre support and is designed for compatible Queen or King mattress-and-box-spring setups.
Is an Adjustable Base Right for My Setup?
An adjustable base is useful when you want independent head and foot positioning, but it requires a mattress specifically identified as adjustable-base compatible.
Sleepwell offers the AD15 Adjustable Bed separately in Twin XL, Double and Queen sizes. Confirm the mattress size, construction and compatibility requirements before pairing the base with a mattress.
